It is SHAMEFUL! Rebecca Steinfeld on NHS breastfeeding promotion @battleofideas
Rebecca Steinfeld comments on breastfeeding promotion posters and how obviously psychologically damaging they are to women at a vulnerable time. Do you agree? Is this psychological manipulation, coercion and blackmailing at a vulnerable time or does it improve the health of babies and women?

NHS breastfeeding promotion - PSYCHOLOGICAL DAMAGE with Rebecca Seinfeld @battleofideas
The one and only Rebecca Steinfeld reacts to NHS breastfeeding promotion poster claiming that breastfeeding is "love, food and protection".

Does this encourage breastfeeding or is it an act of coercion and manipulation that causes psychological harm to women at a vulnerable time? Does it stigmatise, shame and insult families who formula feed their babies?

Why do hospitals advise us to do ‘skin-to-skin’ after birth and is this advice justified? Ruth Ann Harpur and Sue Haddon, co-founders of Infant Feeding Alliance, explore the evidence and share their experiences as mothers.

We look at the Cochrane review of the evidence for skin-to-skin for healthy term babies, and dig into the trials that the researchers reviewed. We also discuss a recent HSIB report on cases of SUPC (sudden unexpected postnatal collapse) that happened when the baby was skin-to-skin with the mother.

How is skin-to-skin connected to the ideology of ‘normal birth’? Is the mental and physical health of new mothers being neglected? Should healthcare professionals be advising us on how we spend our first few moments with our babies?

Dr Clay Jones is a hospital paediatrician in Boston, Massachusetts, and a contributor to the blog Science-Based Medicine. He has criticised current infant feeding policy and practice, something that brought him onto our radar.

Clay talks to IFA’s Ruth Ann Harpur about science-based and evidence-based medicine, the harms of the Baby Friendly Initiative and his thoughts on what might be a safer and more compassionate approach to infant feeding. He also reveals what it’s like to be a paediatrician working in the context of exclusive breastfeeding promotion initiatives.

Francesca Mezzenzana is an anthropologist at the University of Munich. In 2015, she spent time in her husband’s indigenous village in the Ecuadorian Amazon with her baby son.

In this first episode of our podcast, Francesca Mezzenzana talks to IFA’s Ruth Ann Harpur about the culture clash she experienced in Ecuador. Far from adopting the ‘Baby Friendly’ and ‘natural parenting’ practices Francesca had read about and adopted back home, her in-laws were more pragmatic and often amused by her focus on her baby.
